Ethnic Thanksgiving: Cultural Appropriation?

On its surface it appears to be a simple decision: it can be dull serving the same stuffed Turkey with cranberries and potatoes every Thanksgiving. A modern home cook might be itching to surprise guests with some spices or out-of-the-box meats, sweets and starches. Why not make the turkey in curry paste or serve it with peanut sauce? While it's fun to try new ideas fro other cultures, when does borrowing ideas from ethnic cuisine cross the line and become cultural misappropiation?

Give Me Shelter

The American people are suffering from battered woman syndrome. This psychological condition is due to abuse, usually at the hands of an intimate partner. In our case, our abuser is the President of the United States. The President has turned us into a nation of battered women. Battered men also exist, but gender is not the issue. No matter what gender you are, we are legally bound to him, as much as he is legally bound to us. The president is our Big Daddy, and in his hands, we are all being battered.


Beyond the Manger

My best friends in the third grade were twin sisters, Annette and Arlene Frier.  They told me that Chanukah was not a big deal. I believed them. Their father was a Rabbi.  

I was brought up to believe in Baby Jesus. I had a Catholic mass card imprinted with his face aglow under a mass of blonde curls and a halo. In my child-like wonder, I recognized myself in that face.
