The Limits of Presidential Power

In my operational risk seminar this spring, students ranked and then restacked and ranked the top operational risks present in our world.  No one was especially pleased with the results, and the top three risks – cyber-threats, global uncertainty, and terrorism – seemed nearly interchangeable, depending upon the month. As we came to the end of the quarter – particularly with the terrorism acts in Manchester, London, and Tehran -- “global uncertainty” seemed to encapsulate the other two risks, particularly when the elections in France and Great Britain are taken into account along with the performance of the U.S. president on his first diplomatic trip abroad.

Not since the Watergate tapes has there been such a trove of direct evidence about a President’s private conduct.  It could well be that Trump is a puppet of Putin.  Or maybe not. Either way, the Putin tapes will be historic, if they survive.

The Ballad of Billy Barr

Accomplished at playing the bagpipe, Attorney General William Barr plays a ballad of his own—a funeral dirge proclaiming law and order. Billy Barr has long stewed over the immorality and lawlessness of American culture. He blames mental illness, drug overdoses, opioid addiction, crime, violence and suicide squarely on the “bitter results of the new secular age.” 


Is Donald Trump Doing Fascism? The Answer is Yes, but Poorly

His crypto fascism has done a lot of damage to our democracy, but he is also failing at it –for various reasons. If there were a fascist hall of fame, Donald Trump would certainly be qualified for membership.  Where do we begin?Trump has been notably less successful at it than his notorious predecessors and contemporaries – at least so far.  There are a number of reasons for this.
