The Limits of Presidential Power

Category:

In my operational risk seminar this spring, students ranked and then restacked and ranked the top operational risks present in our world.  No one was especially pleased with the results, and the top three risks – cyber-threats, global uncertainty, and terrorism – seemed nearly interchangeable, depending upon the month. As we came to the end of the quarter – particularly with the terrorism acts in Manchester, London, and Tehran -- “global uncertainty” seemed to encapsulate the other two risks, particularly when the elections in France and Great Britain are taken into account along with the performance of the U.S. president on his first diplomatic trip abroad.

Christian Nationalism is like a cancer– but is it Benign or Malignant?

Christian Nationalism is a cancer that can attack our republic's body of democratic institutions. Unfortunately, it has been part of our American culture for hundreds of years. However, America's democracy has not died. Since the Civil War, Christian Nationalism has been relatively nonthreatening, but could it become malignant and spread?

Democracies have prosecuted corrupt leaders – America can too

According to Axis Research, since 2000, at least 76 countries have jailed or prosecuted their former leaders. And while they often fall short in pursuing one, they have rhetorically embraced a multicultural society.

The Right to be Let Alone

I have been teaching a graduate course that I renamed to its original title, “Ethics, Policy, and Law in Information Management,” for ten years now. This spring we read aloud the Bill of Rights, and before I could make my usual statement that the founding documents of the United States are imperfect and still evolving, an Afghan student asked, “Why is there no mention of women in these documents?”

White Man Stakes: On Insanity

The insane, who have achieved infamy, run the gamut from serial killer Ted Bundy to President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Putin is responsible for harming many more people than serial killer Ted Bundy, yet there is deep-rooted cultural reluctance to identify him as insane.
